On September 3rd, the Banner and the Arc Baltimore, alongside other sponsor organizations, hosted a storytelling event at 2640 Space. Shane Hargest from Make Studio, was featured as a storyteller, sharing his experience of the night’s topic; Perseverance.

Shane shared a personal story about his experience at Artscape 2026 surrounding accessibility. Shane attended Artscape as a Make Studio artist, and faced challenges with wheelchair access downtown.

His story had a large emphasis was on how, “we’re all teachers here”, and about Shane’s personal mission to teach others through his daily interactions. According to Shane: “I have a purpose to be in this world and I wanna share it”.

The night concluded with a panel investigating the conversation around perseverance from the perspective of the storytellers. Shane, as a panelist, talked more about how he approaches difficult situations and discrimination. He left us with the quote “perseverance is patience”.

The event was wonderful, and Shane’s story was heartwarming and inspiring. Shane is a delight to hear speak, because his sense of humor always shines. Next time he is speaking, make sure to go, because you will have a great time!

Amongst all of Shane’s wisdom he continues to express:

“To be honest, I just wanna be Shane. People need to look at the person instead of just the disability. I just want people to treat me normal.”
