Dontae’s Work of Art

Young artist Dontae spent some time with us in the studio this summer as part of our Work of Art program. Currently specializing in drawing sandworts and sharks, he wanted to spend time in the studio to get to know the space and further explore exactly what and how he can create. We were lucky to get to know a lot about him and his art practice in a few short weeks.

I do lots of sketches and then I put them onto my computer using Canva [to make digital art].

[At home] I draw at the dining room table. It’s usually quiet. I don’t like music with my art. Maybe a little TV.

I like working in the studio, I had a lot of fun. [It’s a] place where you can draw out your ideas and everyone was nice.

A few other things to know about me:

  • I love playing with my Border-Collie.
  •  I love Canva.
  • [Make Studio artist] Louis talked to me about adding texture with paint markers.
  • I liked talking to people at Make Studio. I might want to join in the future.

You have no idea how big these sharks are [in my drawings]. They are as big as the sky!

My teacher looks at my work and says, how in the world do you make that!!?!

Stay tuned for our quarterly Portfolio Days and our next installment of Work of Art (spring-summer 2026) if you or someone you know is a young artist interested to exploring and broadening their creative practices at Make Studio!
